What is the Course Heartbeat and how do I access this feature for my students?

The "Course Heartbeat" is a feature in Echo that allows students to communicate how they are feeling about their progress in a course. Best practice is to allow students to self-assess once a week or once every two weeks.

How do students use the course heartbeat?

When in a course, a student can self assess by clicking on the heartbeat "self-assess" icon located in the upper righthand corner of their screen.

A student has the ability to self-assess in three categories:

  • Understanding
    • Red = Lost
    • Yellow = OK
    • Green = Competent
    • Blue = Expert
  • Interest
    • Red = Bored
    • Yellow = OK
    • Green = Interested
    • Blue = Very Interested
  • Effort
    • Red = Slacking
    • Yellow = OK
    • Green = Trying
    • Blue = 100%

How do I access course "Heartbeat" data?

To see the "course heartbeat" self-assessment in a course for all students, click on the "people" icon located on a course.

Here one can see how each student feels in relation to understanding, interest and effort within this course.

Organize each heartbeat column by clicking on its label to filter students based on specific feeling in each category.
