How do I Import Standards Sets to my Domain?

Note: This document references views and actions that are only available to Echo Administrators

Echo is pre-loaded with each state's standards, Common Core, and Next Gen Science Standards. Which standards and grade levels that are visible to users can be filtered in the domain settings.

These standards are updated every 2 months (6 times a year) from from the Achievement Standards Network (ASN). Any errors in the state standards, Common Core, or NGSS originate at this source.

Standards can also be bulk imported into Echo using a .csv file. This article describes how to properly create the import file. Standards can also be individually added.

About The .CSV Import File

Open the attached template (located at the bottom of the article). The column headers are the required fields.  

  • ID - In this field enter the hierarchy of the Categories and the subcategories - Generally there is a numbering system that is used
  • Title - Enter the description of the category.  This could be the skills that are to be mastered
  • Subject - Title of Category
  • Grades - Identifies what grade levels the standard is associated with. See this document for the .csv values of each grade.
  • GUID - This is the unique identifier for the standard.   We will use a GUID generator to get the values
  • Parent - This is used to place specific standards under a category
Create an Import File

Step One: Adding Your Standards to the Import File

Below is how the ISTE Standards for Students is organized

  1. Parent/Category ID  - Determine a code for the category and the objectives that live in that category.  In this case the ID was ISTE-CI (Short for  ISTE - Creativity and Innovation) This is the Main category (Parent) under which there are 4 objectives
  2. Item/Subcategory ID -  enter the code/numbering for the objectives under the Main Category.  In this case ".a, .b, .c etc" were used.  But you can use any system that you like.
  3. Title - Enter title for the Main Category (Parent), and on the next lines enter the objective (usually the desired student behavior)
  4. Subject - enter the Category Title for the Main Category for the parent and all the Objective under it.
  5. Grade - Associate the standard with a grade level or levels. Use this document to find the values for each grade level.

 

NOTE:    Standard sets can be organized in different ways.  You will need to determine the best way to organize them for your particular set of standards.

Step Two: Generate and Add GUIDs

Each category, subcategory or objective needs its own unique identifier.  Use an Online GUID generator to create a list of GUIDs that you can use as an identifier.

  1. Enter the number of GUIDs that you need (one per line in your spreadsheet)
  2. Include the hyphens
  3. Click on Generate some GUIDs!
  4. Copy the GUIDs and paste them into the GUID column of your .csv file.

Step Three: Use GUIDs to Organize Standards Into Categories

To organize standards into categories and subcategories, use the Parent column to identify the GUID of the category or subcategory the item will next under.

  1. For top level categories, use 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000   (Red is just for demonstration purposes only to make it easier to see in the .csv file.)
  2. If you have subcategories, enter the category's GUID into the subcategory's Parent column. Repeat for each each subcategory so that they are associated with the correct category.
  3. For each standard, enter the category or subcategory's GUID that the standard is associated with.

Step Four: Create a New Objective Set in Your Domain

Before you can import your standards, you must create a new Objective Set to hold them. If you have several schools in your district that will need to access these standards, be sure to create the Objective Set in the district domain.

  1. Open the Admin App
  2. Select the Objectives Tool
  3. Click on Add [plus sign]

  1. Title -  name the Objective Set (example:  ISTE Standards for Students, AP Framework for Physics)
  2. Owner - Recommend that you use a District Name or a School Name. This value will be added into the Course Option under domain settings, Learning Standards
  3. External ID - optional
  4. Inherit - if you are entering these standards at the district level and would all the schools to have access to them
  5. Click Save

Step Five: Import your File

Your new Objective Set should now be listed. Click on the Objective Set ID to import your standards

  1. Click on the List tab
  2. Select the item and click Import
  3. Browse to your file and then click on Import.

Step Six: Make Standards Available in Your Domain

The final step is to make the new Objective Set available for teachers to add to their courses. This is done in Learning standards panel of the  Domain Settings . Add the Name of the Objective Set to the list of learning standards available to your teachers.
