How do I create and use Feedback templates with replacement variables?

Echo allows you to create and save Feedback templates that you can easily insert when grading activities.

Insert Feedback templates

To insert feedback templates:

  1. Open the Grade editor.
  2. Under Messages, click the Insert template icon in the rich text editor. It is also available in the Private note.
  1. You can click on any template to insert it, adding as many as you want. Hold Shift and click on a template to insert it and close the popup.
  2. Click Edit templates to create new templates or edit existing templates.
  3. Close the Insert template popup in any of the following ways:
    • Hold Shift and click on the last template you want to insert.
    • Click Close.
    • Click back into the Grade editor.

The template appears in the Messages editor.

Create new Feedback templates

You can create new Feedback templates and edit existing templates in the following places:

  • The Grade editor by clicking Insert template in the Messages rich text editor and then Edit templates.
  • The needs grading screen by clicking the Feedback templates icon in the toolbar.

Doing either of these opens the Edit template screen where you:

  1. Click Create template.
  1. Give the template a Title.
  2. Choose a group if desired.
  3. Enter the content using the rich text editor.
  4. Click Done.

The new Feedback template now appears in your list of templates and can be inserted as feedback. If you don't save a template as part of a group, it is saved under the Ungrouped label at the top.

Use groups to organize feedback templates

Categorize your Feedback Templates using groups:

  1. Open the Grade editor by clicking Insert template in the Messages rich text editor.
  2. Click Edit templates.
  1. Click Create group.
  2. Give the group a Title.
  3. Click Done.

Once the group is created, it appears in the Insert template screen. Click Edit templates to edit groups or put existing templates into a group.

Replacement variables

Replacement variables allow you to easily personalize feedback, even in templates.

To use them, place variable codes (outlined in the table below) between dollar signs ($) in your feedback.

Echo automatically replaces the variables with dynamic values drawn from user information.

Replacement variables for feedback

Replacement variables are allowed in various places throughout Echo, but only the variables outlined in this table are available in feedback.

Simply set the variable code between dollar signs ($) to activate the variable, like this:$VARIABLECODE$.

ENROLLMENTLAST Last name of the current enrollment user
ENROLLMENTUSERNAME Username of the current enrollment user
ENROLLMENTUSERREFERENCE External ID of the current enrollment user
