How can Echo help me meet "engagement measure" and "remote asynchronous attendance" requirements?

In schools implementing some form of remote learning, teachers are often still required to take daily attendance to verify that students are participating in the class. While your Student Information System (SIS) is the official record of student attendance for accountability purposes, Echo does have some tools assist teachers in determining if students can be considered "present" in the class.

In addition, Echo tracks each student's activity in the system including how much time they spend on each course and even assignment. Echo's reporting tool allows schools to export data for auditing purposes to verify student activity in the system.

Here are several tools that may be useful:

  1. Daily Course Activity in People Tool (Course)
  2. Activity Tab in Gradebook (Course)
  3. Online Indicator in People Tool (Course)
  4. Student Course Activity Log Export (Domain)
  5. Student Activity Deep Dive Export (Domain)

While Echo can use activity data to log when a student opens a course or an assignment in a browser window, it can not determine if the student is actually spending their time watching YouTube videos in another browser window or on their phone. It's critical for teachers to connect with students frequently to ensure students are engaged in the classwork.

Daily Course Activity in People Tool

At the course level, teachers can quickly see if students have completed the assignments for the day. Enabling the "Today" column in the People tool displays the number of activities each student completed that day. The assignment doesn't have to be a graded task, but it must be an item that has a completion setting.

Course items can be set to be "marked complete" in a variety of ways including:

  • the student opens the activity
  • the student submits work
  • the students views an item for a specified
  • the student marks the task complete
  • the teacher scores the assignment
  • the student receives a passing score

As long as the course has at least one activity due each day, teachers can quickly see if students have completed their classwork. Teachers can use this data at the end of each day as a measure of "attendance" and record the student as present in the school's SIS.

Activity Tab in Gradebook

To drill down deeper into what a specific student's activity in your course has been, the Activity tab on the student's page in the course gradebook can provide additional details. This view show how much time the student has spent on each activity in your course. To view this page:

  1. Open the desired course
  2. Navigate to the course gradebook
  3. Open the "Students" tab
  4. Click on the desired student's name
  5. Click on the Activity tab

Online Indicator In People Tool

For schools where a formal course attendance record is required at a specified time during the day, teachers can enable the "Online" column in the People tool. At the beginning of a virtual class, teachers can see who is present and record that in the school's SIS.

Student Course Activity Log Export (All Courses, All Students)

Echo's reporting tool allows you to generate a .csv file listing the the activity log of each student in each course. The report includes total time spent in the course, date and time of first activity and last activity.

  1. Open the Reports tool
  2. Select the Other tab
  3. In step one, select Raw Activity report
  4. In step two, select "As Of" for the date to run. Setting a prior date can tell you if students were active on a given date.
  5. In step three, download the report
  6. Open in your preferred spreadsheet tool

Note: Depending on the spreadsheet tool used to open the .csv export file, the date columns may need to adjusted so that the format of the date is easily understood.

Student Activity Deep Dive Export (All Courses)

To drill down into a specific student's activity across all of their courses, the User Enrollment Activity report will list how much time was spent on each assignment for all courses.

  1. Navigate to the Reports tool
  2. Select the User Activity tab
  3. In step one, choose the User Enrollment Activity report
  4. In step two, select the desired student
  5. In step three, choose the filter options you wish to apply
  6. In step four, download the .csv file
  7. Open the .csv file in your preferred spreadsheet tool
