As our CEO Jim May shared in his recent letter on November 4, 2026 (Link to the letter here) NTN has made the decision to sunset the School Browser. Echo itself was not affected by the security issue and continues to run as normal. There is no indication that any information was compromised.
Below you’ll find a summary of what happened, the Help Desk articles we’ve published to help you access the same grade information directly in Echo, and how to set up a 1:1 meeting to talk through your school’s needs.
What Happened
On October 21, a major security vulnerability was announced in something called PHP, which is a widely used internet software component and part of what the School Browser is built on. As a precaution, our development partner took the School Browser offline that same day while we evaluated what it would take to bring it back safely.
Why We Are Sunsetting the School Browser
The School Browser runs on an older PHP platform. Rebuilding it to the standard required to protect student information would take months, and schools would have no access to it in the meantime. Protecting student data and keeping your schools running smoothly are our two highest priorities, so we decided the best path forward is to sunset the School Browser and support schools with alternate workflows in Echo.
Alternate Workflows in Echo
These workflows will look different from the School Browser, but they will get you to the same information. Each article below covers one task. We recommend starting with Article 1, since it includes steps (like opening a student’s user detail page) that the other articles build on.
| # | Article | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | How do I view student grades in all courses? | Echo Admins, Staff+Support |
| 2 | How do I print student grade reports? | Echo Admins, Staff+Support |
| 3 | How do I print a course grade detail report? | Echo Admins, Staff+Support |
| 4 | How do I export grade data from my domain? | Echo Admins, Staff+Support |
| 5 | How do I open a course from the Admin App? | Echo Admins, Staff+Support |
| 6 | How do I give support staff access to student grades? | Echo Admins |
About Staff+Support: Staff+Support is a special permission set that gives select staff view-only access to student grades without making them Echo Admins. We recommend it only for select users who need that access as part of their role. Article 6 walks Echo Admins through how to assign it.
Let’s Find a Solution Together
We know schools across our network used the School Browser in different ways, and these articles may not cover every one of them. I’m more than happy to meet with you 1:1 to talk through how your team used the School Browser and find solutions that work for your school. Two ways to grab time with me:
- Book a time that works for you here: https://calendly.com/mstolan-yipz
- Email help@echo-ntn.org with a few times you’re available, and someone from our team will send you an invite.
